Many people who are budgeting for gas on a weekly basis are falling short more and more frequently. They have resorted to taking the bus one or two days per week in order to stay within their budget and save money on their gas bill. The newest and most innovative way to save money on gas is the homemade HHO generator for cars. Not wanting to miss out on this idea I made an attempt to make one of my own and convert my car to a water car.

There are number of ways to implement this build and first on the agenda is the construction of the HHO generator. A quick trip over to your corner hardware store will result in you acquiring most of the materials needed for the build. Many kits will require the use of stainless steel plates or stainless steel wire. If you go with the plates you will need to sand them to remove the glossy surface, this sanding process creates a rough surface resulting in a better release of the HHO gas. You may use this process for the stainless steel wire as well.

The best container for the cell itself is a clear water filter housing which runs around $15.00. This filter housing already comes with a screw on plastic lid with a tough o-ring rubber seal. You will need to drill holes in the lid and add a few connections for the hoses and electrodes. A one way valve is required on the outlet hose which leads into a bubbler, this bubbler and valve isolates the main cell from any backpressure. You will also need fittings to hook up the bubbler outlet tube to the air intake duct.

Whether wire or plates are used there will be positive electrodes (anode) and negative electrodes (cathode). Stainless steel plates will need holes to be drilled in the tops for connections that run through the lid to form protruding poles for the battery connections. Some people use a – NNN + NNN – configuration which means 1 positive electrode, 2 negative electrodes and 6 neutral plates which are not connected to anything. These neutral plates reduce the current flowing in the circuit. A mixture of stainless steel and plastic bolts can be used to connect and insulate the various plates.

The moment of truth for the HHO kit had arrived, all the hook-ups were made. A new battery purchased specifically for this little project provided the juice and viola bubbles started to form. I did a flame test for the HHO gas and sure enough immediate ignition (I do not advise you do this flame test). Well what do you know I built some thing that does what its supposed to, produce HHO gas.
