Furniture Layaway – The New Financing

Today’s furniture buyers are looking for ways to buy quality new furniture without having to apply for credit or take a large financial hit all at once. So how do you get the furniture you want and bypass the above mentioned options?

Layaway is the simple answer to this problem. Most people now associate layaway with large discount super stores, but it is a smart and easy solution to getting quality large ticket items also. In the current economic times, people either cannot obtain the credit they need, or they do not want to acquire any new debt. So either the need of furniture has to be ignored or a layaway plan can be used. So how to choose a store with a layaway plan? Research is the key. You can call local furniture stores, or you can use the power of the internet to find an online furniture retailer who has a layaway plan in place.

Take time to research the retailer. Google the store and make sure there are no negative postings about the store. If you do find any of the stores you want to do business with, call them and ask about the remarks. Sometimes customers who did not get their way will post remarks that are not 100% true. Next you need to make sure you are comfortable with the layaway plan and that it can fit into your monthly budget. Make sure you are clear about the dollar amount of the payments and how long you have to make the payments. Of course you need to know what the cancellation policy is also. If you are hit with a financial crisis will they let you hold off payment? Will the refund you your money if you need it for something else? If they will not refund your money, make sure you can enter into the layaway plan without worry.

Another question you should not be afraid to ask is what does this company do with my money before the layaway is complete and the order is placed? Do they consider it immediate income and spend it? That will be a worry point with so many companies going under right now. A trustful business will have a separate account that all layaway payment go into and is separate from the operating account so that the money is not income for the business until the layaway is complete. So if you need furniture and are willing to wait, a layaway plan is a great option. No, you do not have immediate gratification of the furniture, but that could be a good thing. The harder we work for something the more it means to us. And you may sleep better at night knowing you do not owe a bank any money.

Cleaning & Care of Pool Furniture

Dealing with pool and patio furniture in this Mid- Atlantic region can be very aggravating. Environmental affects such as sun, acid rain and wind along with the chemical impacts of chlorine and suntan lotion eventually destroy the once beautiful furniture. Fading and discoloration is inevitable. However, with a little know-how, you can prolong (sometimes even double) the usable life of the chairs, chaises, tables and umbrellas.

In a commercial setting, standard retail furniture is not strong enough. No matter how upscale the clientele, they still do not treat them as their own. The furniture is abused. This is why it is extremely important to have frames that are built like tanks. The most durable and cost effective furniture to have pool-side is constructed of welded aluminum that is powder-coated. Structurally they should be “beefed up” by having extra support bars in the “stress” areas. The most trouble free seating employs 2″ virgin vinyl strapping that is double wrapped.

Both the powder paint and vinyl strapping are specifically manufactured for outdoor use. These products are formulated using ultra-violet stabilizers and mildew inhibitors. If treated and stored properly you should experience almost a decade of them looking good.. HOWEVER, in my experience, I have found that the longevity of the furniture is more a factor of what you don’t do, rather than what is done. Below you will find my primer of do’s and don’ts.

DO

Recommend that towels always be used on chaise lounges. Have the lifeguards clean a select amount of pieces every morning. Clean only with warm soapy water (light dish detergent such as Dawn) or vinyl cleaners using sponge or soft brush. Top with a vinyl protectant. Protect the painted frames using an automotive liquid or paste wax. Fiberglass table tops should be periodically cleaned and waxed as above. Acrylic table tops are best cleaned with special cleaner designed for acrylic. If not available, use warm soapy water. Clean umbrellas as the manufacturers recommend for the type of fabric used. Always allow to dry in the open position. At the end of the season, clean the furniture, then store a covered, dry area.. Cold will not affect the paint or vinyl, moisture will.

DON’T

Use cleaners that are comprised of harsh solvents or abrasives. This is the number one cause for premature aging & discoloration of vinyl strapping. If at all questionable, don’t use it. Use abrasive pads or brushes Powerwash the frames & vinyl. Although a very low pressure will not harm the surfaces, medium to high pressure will kill them. I have seen this many, many times. It’s too tempting for the operator to “turn it up a notch”. Throw the furniture in the pool when a storm in imminent. The chlorine will not only destroy the paint & vinyl but will also get inside the frames.. Chlorine is very nasty stuff. Clean umbrellas then put them away in the closed position while wet. Use a glass cleaner on an acrylic table-top.

Most manufacturers offer very “limited” warranties, if any at all, on the fading and discoloration of the paint and vinyl on strapped furniture.. Their reasoning is straightforward. If cleaned improperly, the colors WILL fade, the vinyl WILL become brittle and the paint WILL chalk.

Do not be afraid. If treated right, the furniture will reciprocate and treat you to many trouble free years. After 10 or so years give us a call and we can extend the life even further by restrapping and repainting.

Antique Furniture

An antique is typically described as a curio or furniture that is more than a hundred years old. Many people like to decorate their homes with furniture that is antique in nature. Carved wooden ornamental and period furniture best represents this kind of ornamentation. Antique furniture predominantly with wooden carvings allows you to recreate a period lifestyle in your living room, making it distinctive and keeping with the social tastes of that culture or period. Victorian living room furniture is extremely ornate and had exquisite wooden carving details on display.

To buy a piece of antique furniture you must have a thorough knowledge of furniture history and styles in different countries and periods. It can be quite complicated to identify true antiques, imitations, variations, alterations and restorations. People often pass off fake antiques as original if you are not vigilant.

The furniture from the Victorian era exemplifies antiquity to its hilt. Heavily carved, it is usually made up of darkest wood unlike light mahogany finish and satinwood that were used previously. The popular materials used for Victorian furniture were dark mahogany with a reddish tinge, rosewood, black walnut and bog oak. Rich deep hue of dark oak was preferred and the size of the furniture was huge. The relief work in the furniture included skillful and ornamental wooden carvings of flowers, fruit, animals and human figures. The cabinetry of the Georgian period is still treasured today.

American Antique Furniture

American antique furniture encompasses an extraordinary range of models designed over a time span of several hundred years, and pieces often differ significantly in quality of craftsmanship, place of origin, and appearance. Notwithstanding, antique furniture throughout American history, seems to share an inherent character and often a distinctive originality that is central to its appeal.

American antique furniture was enormously influenced by European and English styles. Made of local woods, it often featured painted decoration along with costly wooden carving and veneers of high-style pieces produced in furniture-making centres like Newport and Philadelphia.

The most antique piece of American furniture is assigned to Thomas Mulninert who is known to have worked between 1639 and 1650 in the colony of New Haven. Solid American wooden carved antique furniture was made with walnut and ash. Mahogany was imported Haiti and Santo Domingo and was extremely popular between 1730 and 1840 for the elegant Chippendale, Hepplewhite, Sheraton, and American Empire styles.

Pilgrim (1640-1690) – Antique furniture of the Pilgrim era was large and heavy in appearance. Main ornamentation is carved wooden relief wherein most pieces are made of oak or pine. Authentic 17th century antique American furniture is extremely rare. Many antique Pilgrim style pieces have been heavily restored, particularly the legs and table leaves while the carved wooden ornaments and rungs have often been replaced.

William and Mary (1700-1730) – William and Mary antique furniture was characterized by the dovetail joint and the wooden carving in high relief. The pieces of furniture are generously proportioned with contrasting surfaces. The use of lacquer, veneer, orate carved wooden moldings, and bun feet are typical of this era. The main types of wood used are walnut, maple, and pine.

Queen Anne (1725-1755) Queen Anne antique furniture is characterized by refined scrolled form. The lacquered antique furniture has cabriole legs and hooped seats. The most widely used types of wood were walnut, cherry, and mahogany.

Chippendale (1755-1790) Chippendale style antique furniture has Chinese motifs, Gothic arches, ‘C’ and ‘S’ form scrolls as well as claw and ban feet. The center part forming the chair backs are woven. Chippendale style furniture is almost exclusively mahogany and that from the southern states is often highly ornamented with wooden carvings.
